Each month the Salish Athletic Department would like to take time and honour our top athlete or athletes based on their athletic achievements and leadership skills.  Along with receiving a certificate, each athlete will have the opportunity to be interviewed by one of our school's coaches as we try to discover more about the athletes who've helped contribute to the success of our Salish Athletics Program in 2018

We are pleased to call it "Coaches on Curbs"

2018 - 2019 Athletes of the Month

Coaches on Curbs S01 E01

She would rather try to out run a bear than a rhino and has zero interest in Unicorns.  Our
athlete of the month for September is
Cross Country Superstar

 Emma Kearns
How has your first month gone so far at Salish?
Emma - Pretty well, nice to have a new environment to get use to and meet new people
Coach- Really? Moving school’s in your grade 11 year has been nice?
Emma- Not going to lie it’s been pretty hard, lol

How does it feel to be the first ever Salish Athlete of the month?
E - Pretty honoured it feels awesome to be one of the first ever athletes to wear the Salish colours and uniform
C - Would it take anything away if you were told you received this award because you were the oldest and we didn’t know anyone else’s name?
E - Still honoured!

Based on your cross-country experience would you rather have to out run a bear or a rhino?
E - Ummm, probably a bear. I think a Rhino would be just as fast and the horn would get to me sooner and that wouldn’t be too much fun.
C - When the bear eventually catches you, and you have to be rationale with this beast do go English or En Francais?
E - French, definitely French!
C - What would you say?
E - I don’t know……. Maybe just English and “Bye”, then run the other way, lol

What do you miss the most about Tweeds?
E - I miss the people and teachers at Tweeds and the overall comfort of the school
C - How long do you think it would take you to jog there to say hi to everyone?
E - 20 minutes
C - Would this be a top 5 valley time in your mind?
E - Probably not, actually no, lol
C - But, you’re our athlete of the month? Unbelievable!
Jessie or Live and Maddie? Which one are you watching while eating your favourite bowl of cereal?
E -  LIFE cereal!!!
C - Choco LIFE cereal?
E - Nope LIFE, it’s usually Shreddies or Cheerios in the house, I Love the stuff!

Have you ever wanted to stop mid race to have a snack and should this be a rule change for Cross Country to consider?
E - All the time, I’ve even run past bathrooms before and though about going in for a bit and taking a break
C - Like cheating? Lol
E - NO, like have a little rest, lol
C - If you were forced to have a snack mid race what would it be?
E - An Apple!
C - LIFE cereal and an Apple, you’re out of control! If another competitor was hungry would you share your apple with them?
E - Nope, lol

So far in life what’s been your proudest moment as an athlete?
E - Ummmm… that’s a hard one. I did pretty well at Provincials in Track and Field and that was pretty cool last year, my 4 x 4 team came fourth and that was a really close race. My soccer team also won provincials in 2016 when I was 14 and that was lots of fun.

What do you think about when you run?
E -  Random words to be honest, one word will stick into my head the entire time.  Last race all I could think about was the word application
C - In English or French?
E - French! It just kept on sitting in my head
C - Have you ever thought about unicorns?
E - lol, NO I’m not into that whole unicorn thing
C - When you race this week can you try to think about them, it could actually help  you never know!

If you could jog your way into a local university right now where would it be and what would you be studying?
E - I would jog to UBC O because it’s in the Okanagan and honestly who doesn’t love the Okanagan
C - What are you going to study?
E - At this point probably Occupational Therapy

What does athletics after high school look like for you?
E - I would love to go to a university or college in the states for track or even stay local and play soccer and run track if I could at UBC O

Finally, please place the following 6 competitors in order of finish based on your extraordinary knowledge of competitive sports racing.  Ms. Ridoch, Ms. Bailey, Mme. Ludolph, Mrs. Nowotny, yourself and me. Our event is competitive speed walking - who wins and what’s the final order of finish?
E - Oh my gosh NO, lol ummmm, Madame Ludulph first, probably me next, I’ve done some race walk in my time lol, three way tie next I think.
C - Who finishes last then?
E - awkward stare…… you, lol
C - Not happening this event will occur!!! Thanks for your time Ms. Kearns and for all your hard work and amazing talents. Congratulations on being the first ever Salish Athlete of the Month you deserve it!
