Each month the Salish Athletic Department would like to take time and honour our top athlete or athletes based on their athletic achievements and leadership skills.  Along with receiving a certificate, each athlete will have the opportunity to be interviewed by one of our school's coaches as we try to discover more about the athletes who've helped contribute to the success of our Salish Athletics Program in 2018

We are pleased to call it "Coaches on Curbs"

2018 - 2019 Athletes of the Month

October Athlete of the Month
Coaches on Curbs S01 E02

Two friends who ran all the way to provincials as grade 8's and are totally not prepared to be stranded on an island.  Our
athletes of the month for October are
Cross Country Superstars

 Katie-Syberg Olsen
& Rachel Woode

What do you like most about High school?
Rachel- I like gym because we don’t have to do fitness testing yey and we just get to play games like frew ball.
Katie- I like lunch, lol.
Rachel- ohh, I like lunch too! You get to buy cinnamon buns from the cafeteria.

What sports would you like to get involved with this year?

R- Basketball, track, and well I already did cross country and volleyball. Oh, soccer and ping pong!
K- I want to try all of them!

What are your favorite things about being involved with sports?
R- I like being competitive- it’s kinda funny, lol. I also like meeting new people.
K- I like winning medals and meeting people from places I would never have thought of if it wasn’t for sports.
C- How far away are these places?
K&R- Vancouver, Richmond, some even live in Kelowna and on the island.

What has been your proudest athletic achievement?
R – This summer we went to the junior division championships in Kelowna. We were running in a 4x100m relay and we won! But, the funny thing is that we only had one sprinter on our team.
K- We beat our PB by 2 seconds and won by like 50m! and we got fancy medals, lol.

What motivates you when getting ready for a race?
R- Ummm, I like to talk to people. Then I’ll do a couple sprints but, I never listen to music. Or I’ll talk to my coach and they’ll pump me up-hopefully.
K- I have a playlist I listen to.
C- Do you guys have any specific snacks?
R- ohh, I like licorice and then after a race I like to eat popsicles.
K- Sometimes I eat French fries before a race, but normally it turns out to be a very bad idea.
C- You see, I would opt to eat normal food like an apple and a cliff bar.
K- I like eating carrots too!
A year from now what will you remember most about BC championships?
K- Probably…. How cold it was. Also, my shirt- it’s really nice.
R- I think I will remember how many people there were, and how I almost got trampled. I have a lot of scratches from that race!
C- What about that MC?
K- omg! He was British! British people are the best.
R- We also got subway water bottles.
K- Oh ya, we had to do squats with the subway monkey to get those water bottles.
C- How did you guys like the actual race?
K- Ya that was a terrible experience. I kept tripping over roots!
R- It was actually kinda fun. I was just like “ohh ya, letttss goooo.”

If the ferry had capsized on the way home, what 3 things would you like to have on a deserted island?
R- Ummmm… well, food. Specifically, mashed potatoes and gravy and ice cream. Better yet, a whole turkey dinner! Oh, and probably Katie and my phone.
C- What if there is no cell service or it dies?
R- Well, I’ll make a charger.
K- Wait are we together on this island?
C- Yes.
K- Oh okay. I’ll bring a boat, blankets, and water.
R- Well now I don’t have to bring Katie… so I’ll bring movies/computer, food and a speaker so we can jam out.
C- Sounds like an island party!

Would you rather be stuck in the woods or meet a cyborg?
R- I’d rather be stuck in the woods, so I could be friends with monkeys.
C- what kind of woods are you in? lol.
R- I meant wolves, lol. Wolves seem kinda nice!
K- I don’t want to meet a cyborg that’s kind of terrifying. I read the book Sinder which was about cyborgs and they don’t sound nice.
Between the two of you, who would win a dance battle?
K & R- ME, lol
R – But I’m better at just dance than you?!
K – lol, true you just twirl the controller around though!

What do you like most about each other?
K – About Rachel? That’s hard, lol
R – I feel the same about you, lol kidding!
R- Katie is very, how would you say sometimes energetic! She’s kind of silly in a good way!!
K – You’re the same way too! We both tied to make a cake out of fruit roll ups, lol
K – Also Rachel is always so determined to succeed that it forces me to try harder
R – Ya I push her to be better, lol

Which character in the tv show Friends do you think the other would be?
R – I don’t watch Friends
K – But you’re Rachel, lol
R – I’m Rachel because my name is Rachel, lol
R – I’ve seen one episode, who’s the guy that liked the girl in the wedding dress?
K – Ross!
R – Ya that’s you, lol I don’t know what I’m talking about!
K – lol
R - You’d be Rachel and run in and destroy a wedding and then our friend Cailyn would have to bake a cake lol shout out to Cailyn Gemmell.

What advice would you give next year’s grade 8’s
R – that’s her brother next year, that’s my bestie!
K – I can’t believe he’ll be here
R & K – We’re very loud here as grade 8’s
K – Don’t be loud and don’t eat the fries, not worth it
R – I still like them and please be as loud as you want!
K & R – Have fun and enjoy high school
C- Thanks girls and this has been another episode of coaches on curbs!!!!!!
